Constituent Assembly

The Constitution was enacted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. And came into effect on 26 January 1950.

The Cabinet Mission Plan 1946

The mission consisted of Lord Pethick-Lawrence, the Secretary of State for India, Sir Stafford Cripps, President of the Board of Trade, and A. V. Alexander, the First Lord of the Admiralty. However, Lord Wavell, the Viceroy of India, did not participate.


Indian Independence Act 1947

The Indian Independence Act, passed by the British Parliament on 18 July 1947, divided British India into two new independent states, India and Pakistan

Constituent Assembly

The first temporary 2-day president of the Constituent Assembly was Dr Sachidanand Sinha. Later, Rajendra Prasad was elected president of the Constituent Assembly. The members of the Constituent Assembly met for the first time on 9 December 1946.The last session of the Assembly was held on January 24, 1950. The Constituent Assembly was a one-party body in a one-party country. The Constituent Assembly had 217 representatives, including 15 women.

December 11, 1946 : Elected Dr.Rajendra Prasad and H.C.Mukherjee as the President and Vice-President of the Assembly respectively. Appointed Sir B.N.Rau as Constitutional advisor to the Assembly.
The Interim Government of India was formed on 2 September 1946 from the newly-elected Constituent Assembly. with Jawaharlal Nehru as Vice President.

Drafting
On 29 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed, with Dr B. R. Ambedkar as the Chairman along with six other members assisted by a constitutional advisor. K M Munshi, Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, N Gopalaswami Ayengar , B L Mitter, Md. Saadullah, D P Khaitan

July 22, 1947: Adopted the national flag

January 24, 1950: Adopted the national anthem, national song.Elected Dr. Rajendra Prasad as the first president of India
